Rape as it concerns the scope of this article, is defined as the forced Sexual Intercourse, which may be Vaginal, Anal or oral Penetration by a Body part or object. Sexual assault is sometimes used interchangeably with Rape. A broad view on Rape has its that Rape is a crime of violence, not passion and encompasses a continuum of sexual activity that ranges from sexual coersion to contact abuse such as kissing, fondling, to forcible Rape.
Consequently, the incidents of this global menace; Rape, has been on increase and It is a very wicked offence, it is wicked of an individual to engage in rape or defilement "It has been on record that we have a surge in cases of rape and gender-based violence also reported cases has it that the increasing rape cases across the country with some of the victims also killed.
Medical research has it that Rape is associated with a high risk of pregnancy and contributes to unintended pregnancy in the whole world. The national rape-related pregnancy rate in the U.S is calculated to 5% per rape among females aged 12-45 years and this would be equivalent to approximately 32,000 pregnancies as a result of rape each year. Also, Rape-related STD's are major concerns. Additional diagnostics for childhood sexual abuse are Syphilis, HPV and Herpes simplex Infection. Different long term health effects have been associated with female sexual assault such as Diminished Levels of Functional Capacity alteration of Health perception and decreased positivity of overall quality of life.
Psychologically, There are several mental health consequences of Rape, A rape- trauma syndrome occurs resulting to self blame, body pain, fear, anger humiliation and more this is followed by Delayed organization phase and is characterized by flashbacks and phobia as well as somatic gynaecologic symptoms.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS IN RAPE MANAGEMENT:
In Response to rape any rape case, the healthcare providers are always available to assist the victim via encouragement of primary prevention prevention of rape by involvement in advocacy in professional, Community and educational arenas. The American college of obstetrician and Gynecologists recommends that health care providers routinely screen all patients for a history of rape, paying attention to those who report pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea in order to assertain victims of rape and thereby provide tertiary prevention of long term and persistent physical and psychological health consequences of sexual assault. In addition, counselling can also help the patient understand and recover from her psychologic and physical response, there by diminishing the associated symptoms.
